|Project Title||Genetic Transformation of Rice Varieties and Elite Lines Using the Xa21 Gene for Resistance to Bacterial Leaf Blight|
|Project Type||Contained Use|
|Name of Institution||Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice),Maligaya, Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija,(044) 456-0426/0415 ext. 259|
|Cooperating Institution||International Rice Research Institute (IRRI);
University of California, Davis, USA;
|Project Leader(s)||Antonio A. Alfonso, Supervising Science Research Specialist|
|Experimental Facility/Site||PHILRICE, Nueva Ecija, Philippines|
|Purpose / Objectives||1. To produce transgenic rice varieties and elite breeding lines carrying Xa21 gene for resistance to bacterial leaf blight.
2. To characterize the transgenic varieties/ lines in terms of presence and number of copies of the Xa21 gene.
3. To conduct screen house evaluation of the transgenic lines for their reaction to the bacterial blight pathogen as well as assessment of other agronomic traits.
|Biosafety measures||The Xa21 transformants of Dr. Aldemita be dissociated from the transformant of Dr. Alfonso up to the screen house activities. Dr. Alfonso should come up with his own transformants while Dr. Aldemita’s experiment/report should show that the gene is stably integrated.|
