Reference Number 20040187
Project Title Transfer of Beta Carotene Loci from Improved Transgenic Rice Into Elite Indica Cultivars
Project Type Contained Use
Status Completed
Name of Institution International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Los Banos, Laguna
Cooperating Institution PHILRICE, Philippines;
Syngenta Limited (UK);
The University of Freiburg (Germany);
Supervising IBC IRRI-IBC
Project Leader(s) Gerard Barry
Experimental Facility/Site IRRI, Laguna, Philippines
Purpose / Objectives 1. To begin to evaluate new leading Golden Rice events, produced originally in the UK and in Germany, under Asian climatic conditions and agronomic practices.
2. To introgress these new transgenic loci into leading Asian germplasm, and to subsequently evaluate these materials for release in a number of countries: to transfer the beta-carotene biosynthetic genes from the new Golden Rice events to Philippine and other Asian rice varieties, such as IR64, PSB Rc82, and PJ21, through molecular marker-aided backcrossing.
Biosafety measures 1. The tested plants will be kept in isolation in the CL4 transgenic greenhouse to prevent access of unauthorized personnel.
2. The plant materials for disposal will be placed in sealed plastic bags.
3. The plants grown in CL4 will be destroyed and the pots and soil will be autoclaved at high temperature and high pressure.
4. The plant material from screen house (CS07) would be disposed through burning of straw.
5. The access to the CS07 would be for limited staff only.
6. A logbook will be maintained in CS07 to record the entry of personnel.
7. CS07 will be kept locked.
8.CS07 facility is adequate to prevent rats, birds, etc.
9. Transgenic seeds harvested from CL4 and CS07 will be kept in hermetically sealed aluminum foil package and stored in locked refrigerators designated for storage of transgenic seeds in TCGE Laboratory of IRRI. Movement of all materials will be done in compliance of all relevant biosafety and phytosanitary requirements of the Philippines.
