Purpose / Objectives Evaluation and functional assessment of candidate genes for phosphorous deficiency tolerance identified in the tolerant rice variety Kasalath by transgenic approaches.
Biosafety measures •All vectors will be kept in the plasmid collection of the Biotechnology laboratory.

•The tested plants will be kept in isolation in the CL4 transgenic greenhouse to prevent access of unauthorized personnel.

•The plant materials for disposal will be placed in sealed plastic bags.

•The plants grown in CL4 will be destroyed and the pots and soil will be autoclaved at high temperature and high pressure.

•The plant material from the screenhouses (e.g. CS07 and others) would be disposed through burning of straw.

•The access to the screenhouses would be for limited staff only.

•A logbook will be maintained in the screenhouse to record the entry of personnel.

•The screenhouses would be kept under lock.

•The screenhouse facilities are adequate to prevent entry of rats, birds, etc.

•Transgenic seeds harvested from CL4 and the screenhouses will be kept in hermetically sealed aluminum foil packages and stored in lock refrigerators designated for storage of transgenic seeds in TCGE Laboratory of IRRI.

•Movement of all materials will be done in compliance of all relevant biosafety and phytosanitary requirements of the Philippines.

•identification of the promoters that will be used: any untranslated regions of the three prime end, any artificial termination sequences, any introns, any transit pro-protein, any other enhancers of transcription or any other genetic elements used to express the structural gene that they intend to clone later on, and

•updated curriculum vitae of the scientists involved in the project: Dr. Sigrid Heuer, Dr. Xiaochun Lu, Dr. Joong Hyoun Chin and Dr. Abdelbagi Ismail.
