|Project Title||Development and Commercialization of Fruit and Shoot Borer-Resistant Bt Eggplant: Generation Advancement of Backcross Selections with Mahyco Transformation Event EE-1 and Development of Experimental Hybrids|
|Project Type||Contained Use|
|Name of Institution||Crop Science Cluster - Institute of Plant Breeding, UP Los Baños, Laguna|
|Cooperating Institution||Crop Protection Cluster - Department of Entomology, College of Agriculture
UP Los Baños, Laguna
|Project Leader(s)||Dr. Desiree M. Hautea|
|Experimental Facility/Site||All contained trial activities will be done in the IPB BL2, an approved facility by NCBP.|
|Purpose / Objectives||•To generate a set of purelines possessing the event EE-1 that can be potential varieties or inbred parents of potential hybrid varieties.
•To undertake further backcrossings of selected backcross lines and plants from the crosses with cultivars Mara and Dumaguete Long Purple (DLP) to generate advanced backcross generations (e.g. BC3F1, BC4F1, BC5F1 and BC6F1, etc.)
•To pursue selfing of selected backcross lines and plants to generate selfed generations (e.g. BC3F2, BC3F3, BC3F4, BC3F5, BC4F2, BC4F3, BC4F4, BC5F2, etc.)
•To make line and plant selections from the segregating backcross and selfed generations
•To develop experimental hybrids by crossing pureline selections with promising IPB inbred lines and varieties and selections and evaluating the F1 hybrid progenies for horticultural performance
|Biosafety measures||•Bagging of flowers will be done prior to flower opening to prevent unintended transfer of pollen to non-transgenic plants. Any open flowers will be immediately removed.
•The gate is provided with a padlock and will be locked at all times. All unauthorized personnel are required to sign in the logbook.
•The aforementioned mitigating measures will be followed and no plant parts will be taken out of the contained trial site. The plant parts will be chopped, boiled/autoclaved and buried inside the BL2.
