Project Information

Reference Number 19910002
Project Title Molecular Genetics of Xanthomonas Campestris PV. Oryzicola, bacterial leaf streak organism
Project Type Contained Use (Screenhouse)
Status Completed
Name of Institution Institute of Biological Sciences (IBS),UP Los Banos, College, Laguna,(49) 536-3438
Cooperating Institution IRRI,College, Laguna
Supervising IBC IRRI-IBC
Project Leader(s) Asuncion K. Raymundo, Associate Professor,IBS-UPLB
Experimental Facility/Site IRRI and UPLB, College, Laguna, Philippines
Purpose / Objectives To analyze the virulence gene of X. campestris p.v. oryzicola (XCO2
Biosafety measures 1. Plants will be kept in isolation in a Phytotron which will be sealed to prevent unauthorized entry of persons. There is also no cotton being grown within a 200 m radius of IRRI so the chances of cross pollination are almost nil.

2. After experiments any unused tissues or used media will be autoclaved before discarding.

3. Seeds produced by the transgenic plants will be kept in sealed plastic bags separately from other seeds. If these seeds are not used within 1 year they will be disposed off by autoclaving.
Conditions for Approval 1. Should be properly endorsed by the head of the institution concerned, upon the recommendation of the UPLPB- IBC.

2. Should have sufficient documentation showing that BIOTECH has complied with the following, as evaluated and approved by the UPLB- IBC:
a) The proper containment facility;
b) satisfactory disposal procedures and facilities;
c) The personnel handling the experiments have the proper qualifications and training;

3. Since pathogenicity tests will be done in IRRI, the committee deemed it important that the proposal should be co- endorsed by IRRI.
