Project Title | Assessing Opportunities for Biological Nitrogen Fixation in Rice |
Project Type | Contained Use (Laboratory) |
Status | N/A |
Name of Institution | International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Los Baños, Laguna |
Cooperating Institution | CNRS- INRA, France; MPI, Germany |
Supervising IBC | IRRI-IBC |
Project Leader(s) | J. K. Ladha, Soil Microbiologist |
Experimental Facility/Site | IRRI, Philippines |
Purpose / Objectives | 1. To request NCBP recommendation for issuance of permit to import diazotrophic microorganisms and Enod::gus constructs and allow the conduct of experiments using said strains as well as transform the rice with Enod::gus gene constructs for experimental purposes. 2. Proposal 3: Request for Import of E. coli Strains, Harbouring Nodulation/ Marker Gene Constructs to Be used for Biolistic Transformation of Rice. 3.To establish naturally occurring NH4+ excreting diazotrophs endophytically in rice roots. 4.To identify nitrogen- fixing bacteria which can form nodules or symbiotic association with rice. |
Biosafety measures | a) that the Agrobacterium nitrobacter (if pathogenic) will not be part of the wild type nitrogen fixing microorganisms to be imported. b) IRRI shall provide a description of the containment facilities in the laboratory where the experiments will be conducted; and c) autoclaving and incineration of all plant tissues and soil used in the experiment shall be supervised by the Plant Quarantine Service. |
