Project Information

Reference Number 19940031
Project Title Assessing Opportunities for Biological Nitrogen Fixation in Rice
Project Type Contained Use (Laboratory)
Status N/A
Name of Institution International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Los Baños, Laguna
Cooperating Institution CNRS- INRA, France; MPI, Germany
Supervising IBC IRRI-IBC
Project Leader(s) J. K. Ladha, Soil Microbiologist
Experimental Facility/Site IRRI, Philippines
Purpose / Objectives 1. To request NCBP recommendation for issuance of permit to import diazotrophic microorganisms and Enod::gus constructs and allow the conduct of experiments using said strains as well as transform the rice with Enod::gus gene constructs for experimental purposes.

2. Proposal 3: Request for Import of E. coli Strains, Harbouring Nodulation/ Marker Gene Constructs to Be used for Biolistic Transformation of Rice.

3.To establish naturally occurring NH4+ excreting diazotrophs endophytically in rice roots.

4.To identify nitrogen- fixing bacteria which can form nodules or symbiotic association with rice.
Biosafety measures a) that the Agrobacterium nitrobacter (if pathogenic) will not be part of the wild type nitrogen fixing microorganisms to be imported.
b) IRRI shall provide a description of the containment facilities in the laboratory where the experiments will be conducted; and
c) autoclaving and incineration of all plant tissues and soil used in the experiment shall be supervised by the Plant Quarantine Service.
