Project Information

Reference Number 19950047
Project Title Proposal to import transgenic corn seeds to determine the efficacy of the Bt gene against the Asiatic Corn Borer, Ostrinia furnacalis, under field conditions
Project Type Contained Use (Laboratory)
Status N/A
Name of Institution Pioneer Overseas Corporation,Phil.Crop Research Station, San Isidro, Cabuyao, Laguna
Cooperating Institution N/A
Supervising IBC IRRI-IBC
Project Leader(s) Samuel C. Dalmacio, Research Manager, (Asia) Pioneer Overseas Corporation Crop Research Station
Experimental Facility/Site Philippines (Cabuyao, Laguna and General Santos City)
Purpose / Objectives To determine if the Asian corn borer can be controlled by hybrids expressing a gene from Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Bt), coding for an insect control protein.
Biosafety measures 1. The possibility of gene escape by way of pollen movement has been completely eliminated since the trial will be detasseled.
2. In shipping, the genetically modified seed will be placed in paper packets and secured at the top by a paper clip or staple. The bags will be packed in sturdy, sealed shipping containers with shock absorbing, cushioning material.
3. Tassels that are removed from plants will be placed inside a large sack and subsequently burned.
4. At crop maturity and after data collection, the ears from all plants will be harvested by hand and burned. The grain will not be allowed to enter the food chain or be used as feed.
5. In case of unexpected spread, the maize plants will either be manually chopped, or plowed into the soil. Disposal of exposed plants and soil can be achieved through composting.
