Purpose / Objectives To develop a genetic transformation system using A. tumefaciens for the national productivity program in rice.
Biosafety measures 1. All transgenic plants will be kept in test tubes in the Culture Room of the laboratory until such time that they will be transported to the IRRI containment facility.
2. Panicles of flowering plants will be bagged as an additional precaution against escape of pollen.
3. All plant materials for disposal will be placed in sealed plastic bags and autoclaved prior to incineration.
4. Pots and soil will be autoclaved at high temperature and high pressure after use.
5. Transgenic seeds will be kept in hermetically sealed aluminum foil packages, inside a sealed metal container and stored in locked refrigerators/ chambers designated for storage of transgenic seeds in the cold storage room in the Plant Breeding and Biotechnology Division.
6. The air ducts in the laboratory are made rodent proof and High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters are installed.
7. All laboratory personnel are required to wear a laboratory gown and separate footwear
before entering the laboratory.
Conditions for Approval Experiment should not start until after the PhilRice laboratory has been completed and certified adequate by the PhilRice- IBC and the NCBP to qualify for a P-3 level of containment as required in the guidelines.
