|Project Title||Transformation of Indica Rice (Oryza sativa L.) Using Potato Proteinase Inhibitor II Gene for Insect Resistance.|
|Project Type||Contained Use|
|Name of Institution||National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (BIOTECH),University of the Philippines Los Banos, College, Laguna,049-536-2721; 536-2724|
|Cooperating Institution||1. PhilRice
|Project Leader(s)||Reynaldo V. Ebora, University Researcher|
|Experimental Facility/Site||IRRI and BIOTECH-UPLB, Philippines|
|Purpose / Objectives||1. To determine the effects of different concentrations of Pin2 on the growth, development and fecundity of striped stem borer and the common cutworm.
2. To determine the synergistic effect of different concentrations of Pin2 on the toxicity of Bt- spore- crystal complex preparation and purified 8- endotoxins against striped rice stem borer and the common cutworm.
3. To transform rice using the Pin2 gene via microprojectile bombardment of immature embryo and embryonic calli and select a transgenic plant resistant against insect pests.
4. To assess the resistance of tolerance of transgenic rice against insect pests by laboratory bioassay and greenhouse trials.
|Biosafety measures||1. All transgenic plants will be kept in the transgenic greenhouse. No field release will be done.
2. Soil and other plant tissues used in the experiment will be autoclaved and incinerated.
