Project Title Green Leafhopper Inoculation of Transgenic Rice with Potential Resistance to the Rice Tungro Spherical Virus
Project Type Contained Use (Glasshouse)
Status N/A
Name of Institution Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice),Maligaya, Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija,(044) 456-0426/0415 ext. 259
Cooperating Institution The Scripps Research Institute
Supervising IBC PhilRice-IBC
Project Leader(s) Leocadio Sebastian, Executive Director
Experimental Facility/Site PhilRice, Nueva Ecija, Philippines
Purpose / Objectives To evaluate transgenic rice for resistance to the rice tungro spherical virus.
Biosafety measures 1. Test plants will be kept in isolation in a glasshouse which will be sealed to prevent unauthorized entry of of persons.
2. Test plants will be grown in mylar plastic cages for inoculation and to be enclosed in larger cages covered with nylon- mesh screens at the later growth stages inside the glasshouse.
3. Only male N. virescens will be used for inoculation. After inoculation, the insects will be collected and destroyed.
4. Panicles of flowering plants will be bagged to prevent the release of pollen in the surroundings.
5. Leaf samples of inoculated plants will be placed in sealed plastic bags when transporting to the laboratory for ELISA and PCR.
6. Plants and used soil will be incinerated after the experiments.
7. The seeds that will be produced will be kept in sealed plastic bags and placed inside a sealed metal container separate from other seeds.
